This is gonna be my very own pet project.

I'm gonna teach you guys how to play MLG at a higher level.

*Improving Your Halo 3 Game

How do I improve my Battle Rifle / Sniper Rifle?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions and here are a few tips:

The most common way to improve your BR and Sniper is to practice, practice, practice.

The Battle Rifle does have an inherent spread. The bullets do not always land in the same place in the aiming reticle.

Getting the jump on someone is very important in winning BR fights and getting easy snipes. This can be accomplished by out-thinking your opponents and generally making good decisions in game.

*Should I do 4 headshots or 3 bodyshots - 1 headshot?

It really depends on the situation and your comfort level. If you feel that you don't hit your headshots well enough to go for 4 headshots 1v1, then by all means aim for the body for the first three. This helps to make sure all three bullets from the BR hit your target. And then, for the last shot either aim directly over your opponents head or swipe your reticle over their head.

However, when you are team-shooting an opponent, the 3 bodyshot tactic is not as useful. If you are aiming for bodyshots and your teammate is as well, you will not hit the headshot at the first possible time. Think about it... if you put two shots into your opponent in the body and your teammate does as well, he would have been dead if they were all headshots. However, if you were both aiming for bodyshots he would still be alive, and by the time you kill him one of you might be dead already.

So to make it simple, 3 bodyshots is fine when you know its 1v1. But, if you are expecting or getting help from a teammate you want to aim for headshots.

*Should I aim for headshots or bodyshots with the Sniper Rifle?

It depends on the situation.

If you are positive you can get a headshot off on your enemy, go for it! But be aware that there is much more chance of you missing your shot. One time that headshots are very easy to pull off is if your opponent is walking in a straight line. Another time it would be wise to go for headshots is if your are sniping across map to where none of your teammates are. If this is the case, after one bodyshot your enemy might easily get away and let his shields recharge, which means you wasted one bullet. Instead, a headshot would ensure his death.

However, going for bodyshots can be just as useful to your teammates as headshots. Because of the MLG settings, your shields will take longer to recharge than normal. Therefore, the effect of the bodyshot you put on your enemy will be felt for longer. This makes it more likely that your teammates will easily clean up the kill for you. If you are going around putting easy bodyshots on every enemy you see, their team will either all end up dead or have to hide/retreat, earning your team easy kills and valuable time.

*What are the times for the weapon and item spawns?

Power-Ups Spawn Times Based on Maps

Active Camo /120 Seconds /Pick-Up Clock /G
Custom /120 Seconds /Pick-Up Clock /P, C

Weapons

Rockets /180 Seconds /Game Clock /C, P, N
Sniper Rifle /150 Seconds /Game Clock /C, G, P, N
Mauler /120 Seconds /Game Clock /O, G, P, N, A
Battle Rifle /10 Seconds /Game Clock /O, C, G, P, N, A
Carbine /90 Seconds /Game Clock /O,C, G, A
Plasma Pistol /90 Seconds /Game Clock /C, P
Frag Grenades /30 Seconds /Game Clock /O, C, G, P, N, A
Plasma Grenade /30 Seconds /Game Clock /O, C, G, P, N, A

*Key:
O = Onslaught P = The Pit
C = Construct N = Narrows
G = Guardian A = Amplified

* The above times are based on how they appear within the Edit Gametypes menu of MLG’s official Halo 3 settings. However, there is a dynamic variable outside of MLG’s control that is built into Halo 3. Depending upon when and how you pick up a weapon, it is possible that the game will add an extra 30 seconds onto the times stated above. The most common occurrence of this variable is when a weapon is picked up immediately as it spawns. You'll notice that some weapons spawn inches above the ground and then fall into place. Picking up a weapon before it hits the ground can trigger this odd occurrence. If this issue is ever corrected in Halo 3's code or if we learn more about what definitively triggers it, we will update this section accordingly.

*What sensitivity do the pros play on? What is best?

Pros do not play on any set sensitivity. It is a common misconception to think that all the pros play on '10' sensitivity. They play on whatever feels good to them and is most useful for game play. However, the most common sensitivities are 3-5. Having said that, you should not play on 5 just because the pros do. There is no point is putting your sensitivity to '10' and not being able to properly aim your battle rifle. Just like there's no point putting it to '1' and not being able to turn around quickly when shot from behind. Play on whatever feels best for you because thats when you will play to your potential.

*What is Bumper Jumper?/ Should I switch to it?

Bumper Jumper is a controller layout option that can be accessed on the Game Setup Screen. Players often prefer this because the Jump button (A on default) is located on the Left Bumper (LB) nest to the Left Trigger and the beatdown button is located on the Right Bumper (RB). This allows players to players to jump/beatdown without removing the thumb from the right analog stick, so the player can keep continuing to look at a target or keep it in a certain direction.

Deciding what controller scheme is better is mostly about personal choice. If your having problems jumping or hitting your beatdowns, you may want to switch it up. People may complain that Bumper Jumper beatdowns "don't work as well" but this is probably due to mistiming. Your thumb had to move all the way to the A or B button on default (unless your clawing) and you have to start moving it earlier then you would on Bumper Jumper, often what hinders players.

*What is clawing?

Clawing is when a player uses his/her right index finger to press the face buttons (A, B, X, Y), while using their right middle finger to press the trigger. The advantage of clawing is that you can press the face buttons while aiming with the right analog stick at the same time. This technique became popular in Halo CE and Halo 2 because of the ability to melee or use another related button glitch while maintaining the ability to aim.

Clawing is less popular in Halo 3 because of the newest button configuration Bumper Jumper, which allows you to jump and melee with the bumpers while aiming. Also, the lack of button glitches in H3 contributes to the declining popularity.

*What are callouts? / I need help with callouts on the MLG Maps!

Callouts are names of certain locations on the map.Teams use them to communicate with each other fast, and effectively.Use them when somebody is oneshot,or where a power weapon has been dropped. The most important use of callouts is to tell your teammates where your opponent is,so you can all teamshoot anyone who comes out in the open.

Not everyone has exactly the same names for every spot, but this is as close to universal as it gets. Also remember, that callouts for teams can become more specific and you should look into this as an important improvement in communication for your team.

If you ever need to learn call outs just ask myself, Stk Untouchable or i aM luckyy.

*Why do pros often spin their reticles in circles?

Often called the "OGRE twitch," this originated in Halo CE for the MLG community, when players would spin the crosshair to recalibrate the joystick (the motion has deeper roots in the PC gaming community dating back to the 90s).

In Halo CE, many times the reticle would list to one side or the other off of an initial spawn - this motion would correct the problem. The issue has since been fixed in Halo 2 and Halo 3, but many players still do it out of habit, and others do it because they see pros doing it.

While there is some discussion about this being helpful when it comes to muscle memory and aim, it is generally accepted that this motion gives a player no significant benefit and is something that is done out of sheer boredom or habit.

*What are the MLG rules and settings exactly, and how can I get them?

There are several specific differences between general default settings and MLG tournament settings. These settings are often controversial, although they are generally accepted by the community. Noticeable differences include 110% speed, 110% damage, and 90% shield regeneration speed. Each of these settings are used to enhance competitive gameplay. 110% speed generally produces faster gameplay and more action, along with an emphasis on strafing. 110% damage allows for faster kills, which speeds up gameplay, because 11 Batle Rifle bullets are required for a kill, rather than 12. 90% Shield Regeneration means it will take slightly longer for one's shield to regenerate after a fight. This encourages "chasing," in which one player follows another injured player, because that player will take longer time to heal. Generally, most players accept these settings and agree with them.

One can find a more detailed list and explanation of MLG settings, variants, and maps Here.

The MLG fileshare allows one to download the current version of MLG gametypes and maps. One can access these online using the bungie website through This Link.

There are several specific rules that are enforced both in online circuits and at tournaments.

Some include:
-Use of "Elite" Armor Variants are not allowed.
-Use of Wireless Controllers are not allowed.
-Certain spots, marked as illegal, are not allowed to be used.

Basically, illegal spots are spots that are outside the normal boundaries of a map.
Just use good judgement. Although only spots considered "illegal" can get used disqualified, one should generally use good sportsmanship at all times.

Well that is all for now. More to be posted later!
